| Here’s more proof that people are getting it about not having kids, and yippee! I’m out to make that happen much faster. http://www.scpr.org/programs/patt-morrison/2010/08/04/hold-the-motherhood-please-the-increasing-trend-of/ Yesterday, local talk-radio host Patt Morrison aired a program about adult women who choose not to have children. That number is increasing rapidly. What was really exciting to me is the show stirred so much caller interest they aired a follow-up discussion today. Two days in a row on this topic in one of the largest media markets in the county (I’ve heard “4 million listeners” quoted a few times as their listener-ship) is a great sign. Another great part of all I heard was that the men who called in and posted comments seemed completely free of the “provider as proof I’m a man” drive. Something has really shifted in men’s awareness in that area, and that’s a GOOD thing. Many of the women who admitted to me over the years that they didn’t want their kids said it was their husband who wanted the kids. I actually had the chance to interact with a few of those husbands, and it was clear the only reason these men had wanted their wives to have kids was they wanted to look like a good provider and thus proove they were a good man. That’s exactly why my parents had kids, it’s why most of my former student’s parents had them, and it is clear to me this issue effects millions of people in our culture, often in a devastating way. The proof that people are thinking differently, and that both women and men have shifted their attitudes about this over time has me dancing around my office. This issue is my life’s work and the cause I am passionately committed to! How about you? I’d love your comments. |
